A Masterclass with Sound Artist, Designer and Researcher Therese Næss Diesen
What do we hear in a space and how do we experience it?
How can the sound of a space be a driving force in creative work - in storytelling and art?
In this workshop, Therese Næss Diesen will show and share experiences from her work with film and other art forms, with a specific focus on how the sound of space and place can be a central element in creative work.
In my work with sound to film, a large part of the process has been to create the sound of authentic real and fictional spaces, and to creatively process them. In the hierarchy of film sound, the dialogue often comes first, since a lot of the story often lies in this material. It’s in the foreground.
Through recording ambience and foley on specific locations, and editing sounds from a rich sound archive, I have developed a deeper interest in what I can find in this material. In the background. Maybe I am looking for ways to bring the backgrounds forward. Or to illuminate the qualities in sound when it’s connected to space and place

Therese Næss Diesen listens to, records and creates spaces with sound. She works interdisciplinary between film sound and sound arts, and across documentary and fiction genres. Since 2013 her sonic activity for the film industry encompasses Foley, field recording and sound design. Her artistic practice has included installation, sound drama, and extended reality. She is currently a PhD candidate at The Norwegian Film School at the University of Inland Norway with a research project titled “In Between Real and Fictional Spaces”.
KinemaLab är en verksamhet inom Gothenburg Studios Development och är ett Resurscentrum & mötesplats för utveckling inom film & rörlig bild. Det finns en plats att verka på, möjlighet att labba inom XR som är ett iterativt, praktiskt labb för deltagardriven utveckling av platsbaserade, immersiva upplevelser – med fokus på interaktion, gemensamt lärande och kollektivt utforskande. Tillsammans bygger vi verktyg, testar idéer och utforskar vad som gör en upplevelse levande och engagerande. Du kan även söka stöd både om du är i behov att jobba i en studio eller av inspelningsteknik. Vår huvudsakliga målgrupp är 16-29 år & boende i Västra Götaland. Vill du arrangera en ”Work-in-progress visning? Hålla castings? En plats för repetitioner? Alla filmrelaterade projekt är välkomna att ta plats i studio 4!
